What is FGM(Female genital mutilation)
Female genital mutilation (FGM), also called ‘female circumcision’, is defined by the World Health Organisation as any procedure involving the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Many of our community members still are not aware that FGM is illegal in the UK, with a penalty of up to 14 years in prison..
How are we going to stop FGM?
- We are organising face to face conferences in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Southampton and Croydon in where community leaders, religious leaders, lawyers and doctors will be invited to give lectures on FGM.
- we are helping victims access FGM specialist clinics, including going with them and translating when necessary. We will also help victims to access counselling and other relevant services
